School System uses Social Media

CCPSLogoPCblank_background_biggerCurrently, Chesterfield County School System has 95 followers on Twitter and is expected to expand its follower base as the school year is scheduled to begin within the next month.  Chesterfield County School System is using social media sites like Twitter and Facebook as  outlets to communicate with parents and students, while opening up a dialogue for feedback. With Chesterfield County Schools leading the way with others, you will begin to see other school systems tapping into the social media world, as they see the importance and value of the communication tools.  With school systems making the step into having a social media presence, businesses should not question its importance or value.  Read the below article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

logo252x90-1People have started following the 58,000student school system as it makes the leap to the Internet’s Facebook and Twitter social networks.

“More people are going online to get their news,” said Shawn Smith, an assistant director for community relations for the school system, whose department was in charge of creating the Twitter and Facebook accounts.

“It’s important for the school system to go online where people obtain their news.”

Richmond city public schools also use the social-networking sites.

Twitter is a social-networking Web site that allows users to post messages, called tweets, of up to 140 characters. The school system’s Twitter name is CCPSinfo.

Superintendent Marcus J. Newsome also will have a Twitter account, in addition to a blog on school topics. “I am excited about using Twitter and Facebook as new avenues of communication between the school system and the public,” he said. “In addition to my blog, my tweets will allow for even further exchange of ideas.”

Facebook allows for more content, and the Chesterfield school system has posted its latest news, School Board meeting information, pictures of students and staff members, and PowerPoint presentations.

The school system’s presence on the social-networking sites comes as it has launched a redesigned Web site.”
